Just like on the real stock exchange, share prices rise and fall as demand for them changes. So you can make money by buying low and selling high. This process is known as "Daytrading" though often you will find you need to trade more than once a day. Prices are updated at 12, 32 and 52 minutes past every hour (that's every 20 minutes) so you can make or lose money in a celebrity extremely quickly. Remember, every time you trade (buy or sell) you will be charged 1% commission (ie you lose 1% of your worth for sell all shares you own and then lose 1% more when you buy max of the next Celebrity you want). \n\nObviously, you can't be at your PC 24/7 and you'll never know if your pick will suddenly drop the moment you dare to leave your PC for any extended period of time, but that's the risk you take.
[img[Market Snapshot|http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k262/The_Sandman_2006/movers.gif][http://www.bbc.co.uk/cgi-perl/celebdaq/trade.cgi?snapshot=1&snapshotRows=10]]\n\n\nYou can obtain extremely good gains from Daytrading with very little skill - simply refresh the [[Market Snapshot|http://www.bbc.co.uk/cgi-perl/celebdaq/trade.cgi?snapshot=1&snapshotRows=10]] regularly (its updated every 20 minutes at 12, 32 and 52 past the hour) and if your chosen celebrity is not in the top 5 or so, sell up and buy a celeb that is. \n\nThere are a couple of problems with relying on the Snapshot. Firstly, the %age gain statistics it provides are 20 minutes out of date so, for example, if one of the top moving Celebrities suddenly drops 1p at the 3:12pm price update, the Snapshot won't reflect that until 3:32. Secondly, be very wary of updating bang-on the update time - the statistics can look iffy at best. It is reccommended that you wait a few minutes to check (i.e. at 15, 35 and 55 past). Also, the Movers & Losers link in the lefthand navigation menu takes you to a page that is even more out of date. If you use this link, click on the "more shares" button on the right for a more accurate page. \n\nTo view even more rows of the Snapshot, click on the "more shares" icon on as many times as you need.
A relatively new feature of Celebdaq are RSS feeds and one of them in particular can help you make daytrading decisions more easily. The [[RSS Net Change feed|http://www.bbc.co.uk/celebdaq/syndication/1/transaction/netchangeRSS2all.xml]] is updated every hour at around 20 past. It works out the number of shares bought minus the number of shares sold in each celebrity. The celebrities at the top of the list are usually among the top movers. \n\nWhen following the raw data link above you'll find a lot of extra tags, etc. Don't be put off by these as looking at that page directly is the best way to see the most up-to-date information - most importantly, it tells you the time of it's last update. It should be noted that occassionally the RSS Feeds stop updating and become out of date by many hours. \n\nA prettier version of this (without the time) can be found [[here|http://uk.msnusers.com/CelebdaqUltimates/documents/celebdaq%20rss/netchange%2Ehtml]].
The top mover often changes soon after potential dividends have been updated. For more in dividends please see [[3 Dividends and Yields]].
If a celebrity's picture features on the main Celebdaq page, they're often also among the top movers. When the celebrity's picture is later removed from the main Celebdaq page, they often start dropping. It's maybe just coincidnece but nevertheless it only takes a few seconds to refresh the main Celebdaq page to see if the picture has changed. \n\nNewly listed Celebrities often benifit from this effect.
The top mover often gains around 40% before dropping. The best way to measure this gain is to look at the Celebrity's daily price graph and guestimate their price when they started to gain. Then calcute their total gain by dividing their current price by the guestimated price, taking away 1 and multiplying by 100. For example a Celebrity who started gaining when priced £2.10 and is currently priced £2.66 has gained 27%. \n\nWhilst it would be rash to just sell the top mover when they hit the magical 40% mark, it may be advisable to keep a closer eye on the market as the drop may not be far off (disclaimer: sometimes a top mover only gains 20% and somtimes they gain upwards of 60% - this is by no means an exact science).
I was going to title this section "Sienna Miller never lasts", but I thought it was a bit harsh. Still it's true, despite her relative cheapness and regularly decent sized dividends, she never seems to stay as top mover for more than a couple of hours - buy her for daytrading purposes at your own risk.
When daytrading you might be in 2 or 3 minds as to who to buy. You don't have to pick just one Celebrity - you can spread your worth between multiple Celebrities then when (if) one of them turns out to be doing better than the others, sell the others and put everything into the best Celebrity.\n\nThis strategy reduces the risk involved in daytrading since if one of your picks drops you will lose less money.
[[3.1 Dividends]]\n[[3.2 Potential Dividends (PD's)]]\n[[3.3 Yields]]\n[[3.4 Monday Yields]]\n[[3.5 True Yields]]\n[[3.6 Switching Midweek]]
Dividends are the easiest way to make money in a week. \n\nEach Thursday night at midnight dividends are paid out to celebrities who have featured in the various newspapers and magazines that count (see the BBC's official list of publications: [[here|http://www.bbc.co.uk/celebdaq/faq.shtml#dividends]]). \n\nThe money often takes 30 minutes to appear in your account and the market becomes temporarily shut for around the same time. \n\nTo qualify for a celebrity's full dividend you need to have held shares in them from Tuesday midnight (Monday night) until Friday midnight (Thurday night). If you invest after the deadline you will only recieve a portion of the dividend. This portion is directlly proportional to the time remaining until dividends are paid. For example, if you invest at noon on Tuesday you will only recieve 5/6ths of the celebrity's dividend. If you invest at noon on a Wednesday you will receive half the didvidend since noon on Wednesday is exactly half way in the dividend holding period. \n\nWarning - If you sell your celebrity before you are given their dividend, you will not recieve a dividend.
Each Celebrity's Potential Dividend is updated multiple times throughout the week so you have a fair idea of who is going to payout what. \n\nPotential Dividends are usually updated any time between noon and 6pm on non bank holiday weekdays. This means that the column inch measures have a bit of a backlog after the weekend - generally Saturday and Sunday's coverage is inputted on a Monday whilst Monday and Tuesday's papers are added on a Tuesday. \n\nThere is a thread on Ultimates which Players use to flag PD updates [[here|http://groups.msn.com/CelebdaqUltimates/general.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_Message=12469&LastModified=4675577993382825619&all_topics=1]].
The Yield of a Celebrity is their dividend divided by their price. The higher the value, the more profitable the Celebrity will be. \n\nFor example, a Celebrity priced £10 receiving a dividend of £5 has a yield of 50% (5/10). A celeb priced £5 receiving a dividend of £3 has a yield of 60% (3/5). This means the second Celebrity is more profitable.
If you are trying to maximise your millions rather than going for Top Trader, you probably want to pick the Celebrity who obtains highest Monday Yield by the end of the week. Of course you won't know for definite who that is until Thursday night - 3 days after you've had to make your decision! \n\nThe Monday Yield of a Celebrity is the dividend plus price change over the dividend holding period divided by the price as at the start of the dividend holding period (midnight Monday night). \n\nFor example, a Celebrity priced £2 at the start of the holding period, priced £3 at the end of the holding period and receiving a £4 dividend will have a yield of 250% (= (4 + (3 - 2)) / 2) \n\nThe official BBC site doesn't provide you with the Monday Yield statistics, but Ultimates does [[here|http://groups.msn.com/CelebdaqUltimates/mondayyields.msnw]].
If you are going for Top Trader, you want to pick the Celebrity who obtains the highest True Yield by the end of the week. Again, you won't know for definite who that is until Thursday night. \n\nThe True Yield of a Celebrity is the dividend plus price change between Wednesday 6am and the end of the holding period (midnight Thursday night) divided by the price as at Wednesday 6am. \n\nExample - a Celebrity priced £3 at 6am on Wednesday, priced £3.50 at the end of the holding period and receiving a £5 dividend will have a True Yield of 183.33% ((5 + (3.50 - 3)) / 3)\n\nThe reason the Wednesday 6am price is important is because any price gain you make in your dividend choice from Monday to Wednesday will be wiped off your 7 day gain by the time next week's Top Trader is decided. \n\nThis means to increase your chances of winning Top Trader next week you actually want your chosen Celebrity's price to drop (or at least not rise too much) between Monday and Wednesday this week! Hence, the top Monday Yielding Celebrity will not necessarily be the top True Yield. \n\nThe following table attempts to illustrate the difference using 2 different acounts. On Monday night of week 1 (Mon night 1), the first account is invested into 10,000 shares of a Celebrity priced £2 who will receive a £5 dividend. This Celebrity will rise 50p between Mon night 1 and Wednesday morning (Wed 6am 1) before dropping 50p by the time dividends are paid out (Thu night 1). The second account is invested into 10,000 shares of a different Celebrity priced £2.50 and receiving £4.5 dividend. This Celebrity drops 50p between mon night 1 and Weds 6am 1 before rising 50p by the time After dividends, both accounts are identically daytraded, gaining 200% between dividends being paid out and Wednesday morning of week 2 (Weds 6am 2).\n\n|!Account|!Worth Mon night 1|!Worth Wed 6am 1|!Worth Thu night 1|!Mon Yield|!True Yield|!Worth Wed 6am 2|!7 day gain|\n|!One| £20,000| £25,000| £70,000| 250%| 180%| £210,000| 740%|\n|!Two| £25,000| £20,000| £70,000| 180%| 250%| £210,000| 950%|\n\nAgain, the official bbc site doesn't provide you with the True Yield statistics, but Ultimates does [[here|http://groups.msn.com/CelebdaqUltimates/trueyields.msnw]].
Occasionally, it can be more profitable to ditch your chosen Celebrity midweek in favour of another Celebrity even though you will not receive the full dividend he/she is due. \n\nThe Switch Yield of a Celebrity is the amount of profit you will make if you switch into that Celebrity right now. It is calculated by multiplying their potential dividend by the proporton of the holding period left and dividing by the current price. \n\nFor example, at noon on a Wednesday (exactly half-way into the holding period) a Celebrity priced £2.50 has a potential dividend of £4. Their Switch Yield is therefore 80% (4 x 0.5 / 2.50). \n\nThe Keep Yield of a Celebrity is the amount of profit you will make from now until the end of the dividend holding period if you stay with your chosen Celebrity. It is calculated by dividing their potential dividend by the current price. \n\nFor example, a Celebrity priced £4.50 has a potential dividend of £3. Their Keep Yield is therefore 66.67% (3 / 4.50). \n\nIt should also be noted that these statistics do not take into account future price movements and potential dividend increases. \n\nOnce again, the official BBC site doesn't provide you with the Switch Yield statistics, but Ultimates does [[here|http://groups.msn.com/CelebdaqUltimates/switchyields.msnw]].
[[4.1 Introduction to Kneecapping]]\n[[4.2 Icons]]\n[[4.3 Downtrading]]\n[[4.4 Micro Downtrading]]\n[[4.5 Maximising Your Millions Walkthrough]]
Introduced by the Celebdaq management to stop players with huge worths having too much of an effect on the market, kneecapping happens to everyone - if you want to continue making money for your account you will be kneecapped. Some players get kneecapped every 2 weeks. \n\nIt occurs when your account is worth more than £1m at 6am on a Monday morning. Your worth is reset to £10k and your portfolio is given icons representing how many whole millions you made (i.e. you will receive the same amount of icons for £4m as you would £4.9m). It is possible to make over £10m before being capped... if you time it right. \n\nIcons accumulate so if you make £1m from your first kneecapping and £2m from your second, your portfolio will have £3m in icons (3 fat wads of cash, see below).

You can avoid kneecapping temporarily by downtrading. This is the process of reducing the worth of your account to under £1m by repeatedly buying and selling shares (i.e. losing 1% commission for each trade). This allows you to re-invest your money on Monday morning, invest in dividends on Monday night, receive your dividends on Thursday night and daytrade your little cotton socks off over the weekend and potentially making several more million than you would have done the previous week. \n\nSince the downtrading process is an extremely tedious task, a robot downtrader has been designed to do the work for you - to use it, simply download the Kayfabe.jar trading tool which can be found in the documents section of Ultimates [[here|http://groups.msn.com/CelebdaqUltimates/documents.msnw]] (instructions on how to download the tool can be found [[here|http://groups.msn.com/CelebdaqUltimates/downloadjavatools.msnw]]).\n\nYou can also downtrade accounts on a Monday night before you've made you dividend holding decisions in order to avoid kneecpping the following week and thus maximise your chances of winning Top Trader. Downtrading to around £50k should mean that you're safe.\n\nWARNING! Downtrading will harm you 7 day percantage in the Players' Chart and Mini Leagues for a full week.
(Please read section [[6 Multiple Accounts]] before this section) \n\nMicro Downtrading is the process of repeatedly buying and selling small amounts of shares in order to minimise the amount of cash in your portfolio. Spare cash in your portfolio is a waste as you can't make any profit out of it through dividends or daytrading. \n\nThis process should only be performed on a Monday night when you're making your dividend holding decisions and should not be performed on accounts you're daytrading. It also pretty pointless Micro Downtrading your Main account. \n\nNo tool is currently available for Micro Downtrading purposes but the task isn't as time consuming as proper downtrading. Here's a step by step guide: \n\n#Make your dividend choice and BUY MAX in your chosen Celebrity \n#Multiply the amount of cash you have left by 50 and divide by the price of your chosen Celebrity \n#Round this number down to the nearest whole number and SELL this amount of shares of your chosen Celebrity \n#BUY MAX in your chosen Celebrity \n#Repeat steps 2 to 4 until the number of shares you calculate to SELL is 0
The following walkthrough assumes it will take you 3 weeks to accrue £1m. It is possible (if you're really good and/or lucky) to do this quicker - if that is the case, just ignore one set of Friday morning / Monday night steps. If it takes you longer than 3 weeks then repeat one set of Friday Morning / Monday night steps. \n\n#Monday morning Week 1 - you are capped and left with £10,000 cash - daytrade as best you can for the rest of the day. \n#Monday night Week 1 - make your dividend choice for the week. \n#Friday morning Week 1 - check your portfolio to see if you've been paid. When you have and the market re-opens, start daytrading again until Monday night. \n#Monday night Week 2 - make your dividend choice for the week. \n#Friday morning Week 2 - check your portfolio to see if you've been paid. When you have and the market re-opens, start daytrading again. \n#Monday night week 3 - make your dividend choice for the week. \n#Friday morning Week 3 - check your portfolio to see if you've been paid. When you have and the market re-opens, start daytrading again. \n#Friday, Saturday, Sunday Week 3 - Keep an eye on your worth. When you're worth more than £1m, sell all of your shares and downtrade to make sure your worth is less than £1m (exactly £1m is safe, 1p over and you're capped). Keep your account liquid until Monday morning. \n#Monday morning Week 4 - you've just avoided capping - start daytrading again for the rest of the day. \n#Monday night Week 4 - make your dividend choice for the week. \n#Friday morning Week 4 - check your portfolio to see if you've been paid. When you have and the market re-opens, start daytrading again. \n#Sunday night Week 4 - check your portfolio one last time before kneecapping - if it's impossible to make another million before 6am Monday and selling all your shares won't drop you down £1m, sell up and leave your account liquid. \n#Monday morning week 5 - you've been capped - START AGAIN!

These I.D.'s can be found in players' portfolios and are usually 7 numerical digits long, beginning with a 3 or a 4.\n\n[img[league|http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k262/The_Sandman_2006/league1.gif]]\n\nNext you need to view your mini league by selecting it in the list of leagues you own and clicking "view league". You then need to click "add member" in the top right of the page. Finally, enter the I.D. of your new player in the box provided and click "Submit new details". You should be taken to a page telling you if this was successful or not. The most likely reason for it not being successful is if you got the I.D. wrong. \n\nThe Kayfabe.jar Celebdaq tool also has Mini League management capabilities. [[6.1 Why have more than one account?]]\n[[6.2 Rules]]\n[[6.3 Managing]]\n[[6.4 Multiple Accounts in Mini Leagues]]
When you are capped or you require to downtrade, you sacrifice your %age gain and therefore can't get to the top of the charts for a week or 2. Owning a 2nd account which you make sure doesn't follow the same capping cycle helps you avoid this situation.\n\nAlso, on a Monday night, you may be in 2, 3 or even more minds as to who you want for dividends. With multiple accounts, you can spread your bets then daytrade your "best" account come Friday.
The official Celebdaq rules allow multiple accounts as long as you use different strategies in them all. This is open to a lot of interpretation but the general concensus is that you shouldn't hold the same Celebrity in more than 1 non-main account for the full dividend holding period. It's also unnecessary to daytrade more than 2 accounts at one time - your main account and your account that has the best chance of winning for top trader should suffice. Usually you wouldn't daytrade your main account after the dividend holding period has started (i.e. Monday night).\n\nThe BBC board recently issued [[this|http://www.bbc.co.uk/celebdaq/news/statements/2006/08/17/35731.shtml]] statement regarding multiple accounts in a bid to help clarify the rules.\n
Managing multiple accounts is a difficult task to do from memory alone. You could keep track of your accounts by writing things down or using a spreadsheet. Or you could use the Kayfabe.jar Celebdaq tool which provides you with a lot of useful information. It can be found in the documents section [[here|http://groups.msn.com/CelebdaqUltimates/documents.msnw]] (instructions on how to download the tool can be found [[here|http://groups.msn.com/CelebdaqUltimates/downloadjavatools.msnw]]).
In general you can only register one account for each league out there. It is recommended that you register your main account for these leagues. Avoid leagues that encourage you to break the multiple accounts rules. Some leagues allow you to register up to 5 accounts - for example ~Ultimate-X and Discworlds.
The following walkthrough explains how to manage your non-main accounts. \n\n#Monday afternoon Week 1 - Make sure your non-main accounts are all worth less than £50k and downtrade if necessary. \n#Monday night Week 1 - Put all your non-main accounts into differnt Celebrities and Micro Downtrade. \n#Wednesday Week 1 - make note of all your accounts' Wednesday 6am worths as shown in Mini Leagues and the Players' Chart. \n#Friday morning Week 1 - after you've recieved all of your dividends work out which account has made the most profit since Wednesday by dividing the worths now by the worths at 6am on Wednesday. The account with the highest ratio is your best account - start daytrading it ASAP. \n#Friday, Saturday, Sunday Week 1 - continue daytrading your best account. Do what you like with your other non-main accounts (now is as good a time as any to downtrade them ready for Monday) \n#Monday Week 2 - Continue daytrading your best account. Set up and invest your other non-main accounts in order to try to win Top Trader the following week. \n#Tuesday Week 2 - Nearly there - continue daytrading your best account \n#Wednesday morning Week 2 - check the Players' Chart - if your account is at the top of the list you've won and should be contacted by the BBC within the next 24 hours.
Below is a list of the most important events during the Celebdaq Trading week: \n\n#Dividend payout Friday midnight (Thursday night).
